Picked up this power wheels for free because it’s non functioning right now. My father in law and I are gonna try and get it running for my son and possibly turn it into a power wheels derby car for next year’s county fair

First thing I would check is connection to the motors. The wires have a tendency to break there. If you are lucky you can solder them back. If not, and the tabs broke off of the motors you’ll need new ones. If you do need to buy parts, I’ve bought parts for mine from ML Toys (www.mltoys.com). They have pretty much everything from just getting it running as a 12V to upgrading to 18 or 24. I’m thinking about a 24V upgrade now because my daughter is too heavy for it but still loves driving it. Also, get a quick charger from Amazon - well worth the money.

Ok so I think this was already modified because there’s a battery box bolted into the bed that looks like it can fit a full size car battery

Good grief. You can use an upsized 12V battery for more runtime, but there are larger ones that still for under the hood. Check for fuses and see if any are blown. If they ran a car battery without an in-line fuse they could have seriously burned things out.
